Dermal fillers are a great way to look younger as they can plump up your skin, smooth wrinkles and fill out deep lines to restore your natural contours and give you a fresher appearance. They work by replacing the collagen lost due to natural ageing and skin damage from sun exposure, smoking, air pollution and stress.

Dentists have the perfect skills for delivering this type of cosmetic treatment safely and comfortably because they have trained in proper injection techniques from the very beginning of their careers.

Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid – a natural substance found in the body, which attracts water to the skin and plumps it up. Over time the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body depletes, causing fine lines to appear, particularly around the nose, mouth, lips, cheeks and forehead.

So essentially these are ‘top-up’ temporary fillers, and they are injected in small controlled doses just under the surface of the skin using an ultrafine needle – common areas are the peri-oral lines between the middle of the nose and the middle of the top lip, the nose to mouth lines on the outside of the mouth, and the mouth to chin lines underneath the bottom lip. Depending on the type of dermal filler used, results last up to six months.

The procedure usually takes no longer than 30 minutes and you can leave the clinic as soon as you are ready.

You can return to day-to-day activities straight away, although you may experience some slight swelling or bruising to the area being injected, this typically lasts no longer than 48 hours. Because the effects are temporary, dermal fillers are a great introduction to cosmetic treatments if you have never had them done before and, performed regularly, they will help to replenish the moisture in the skin, preserving your youth and increasing your confidence.
